Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Climax
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
