Alleged Stalker Inquired: 'Yet What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman accused with stalking Kate McCann apparently recorded her a voicemail message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who a jury heard has consistently declared she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial indicted with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, the tribunal learned communication data and data recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test during that period.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - when she was three years old during a family holiday in Portugal - is one of the most widely reported child disappearance cases and is still unsolved.
'I Do Not Need Money'
A separate voicemail, presented in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I know I'm heavy and plain like Madeleine was, but I feel what I believe."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's voicemail expressed: "What if there is a slight possibility that I'm her? What happens next? Wouldn't that be crucial for you?"
"I don't want money, I possess a life here in Poland, I only wish to know," the recording stated.
The tribunal was informed that through emails, text messages and calls, Ms Wandelt requested a biological test, transmitted childhood photos to her phone in a bid to display a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and stated to have "flashbacks" from a early life with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with Leicestershire Police who compiled the evidence, advised the court there "seemed to lack any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore communicated with close associates of the McCanns, according to the phone records.
On October 9th, 2024, Gerry McCann answered a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "the wrong phone."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a recording on Mrs McCann's answerphone saying "I will continue and I plan to establish my point."
The court learned Mrs Spragg struck up a association through digital means with Ms Wandelt prior to accompanying her on a trip to the McCanns' residence in the county in December 2024.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out through WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to express the news outlets had portrayed Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be treated respectfully in the time leading up to the visit to Rothley, that area, in December 2024.
The court heard communications between the two individuals, in last November, discussing attempting to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from silverware at a dining venue.
"We must take action," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the evening of the trip to their house, the defendant dispatched a text which stated: "We are positioned adjacent to the McCanns' home with our headlights off similar to investigators. I desired to accomplish this with another person I never thought I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The proceedings ongoing.
