A inquiry agent central to the lawsuit brought by the Duke of Sussex and others targeting the publisher of the Daily Mail has asserted his autograph on an earlier testimonial document was a “forgery”, the high court has heard.

The investigator, linked to the gravest allegations of illicit information gathering made by seven high-profile figures including Elton John and the activist, disavowed his purported statement, saying it was “completely false”.

Background of the Alleged Statement

The private eye had reportedly asserted in a 2021 witness statement that he and his team obtained information by accessing voice messages, intercepting landline phones and bugging automobiles. He also reportedly claimed he had been employed on behalf of the Sunday publication.

The publishing group is accused by the plaintiffs of conducting or authorizing unlawful activities such as hiring PIs to place surveillance equipment inside vehicles, deceptively obtaining confidential documents and intercepting confidential calls. Withdrawal and Fresh Allegations

Five of the claimants have told the high court they initiated the lawsuit against the publisher based on information allegedly gathered by Burrows.

Burrows had earlier withdrawn his supposed statement in last year. In a new detailed testimonial document made on a recent date, and made public by the high court on this week, he restated his disavowal, stating he had never engaged in any illegal activity on behalf of the company.

In the latest testimony, he stated he did “not identify” the supposed witness statement on that date”. He stated he was of the opinion it was “created by third parties”, that the “signature is not mine”, and did dispute the truthfulness of a great deal of the information”.

Burrows declared: “I do not recognise the earlier witness statement of 16 August 2021 and I think that my autograph on that paper is a fake. A lot of it is not phrased in my style of speaking. Moreover, the substance of the testimony are mostly untrue.”

He continued that he had “not once” carried out work for the Mail On Sunday or the Daily Mail, apart from one assignment concerning Sir Richard Branson that “did not involve any illicit behavior”.
