The Boss Enzo Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Blues
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.
The Italian offered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game interview despite securing a 2-0 win at home thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.
However, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and general performance, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his displeasure over the previous two days at the club.
"The way the squad are eager to improve has been superb and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with numerous challenges, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because a lot of people didn't support us."
Pressed on what he meant, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are very content with the fans."
Injury and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our top player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to appreciate because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments
It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.
In that period, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton team.
It was not obvious whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an matter involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
