The Mayor-Elect states his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his victory in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
