UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
